Meeting Gono

‘Gono and I just before a ride to view the destruction of the Yogya earthquake.’

Early February 2000 I was staying in Bali, Indonesia when I heard a knock on my door. Standing there was my new friend Sabi from France. She informed me that we needed to leave ‘now’ to get my ticket to fly to Yogyakarta in the morning.

Being always ready for an adventure I gladly made the preperations. When we arrived she told a taxi where to go and soon I was at Joglo Jago meeting Sudargono and his family and friends. They were extreemly hospitable and welcomed me into their home.

Over the course of a week I got to know Gono and Tuti quite well. Gono was having an art show in Yogya, ‘In “Divide Et Impera” Land.’ This was a wonderful experience. The Indonesian press was there and I was even on nationwide T.V. as an international art critic. Sudenly, it hit me. I was going to buy one of these beautiful paintings. For the next day in a half I debated and finally dicided to buy ‘Dance’.
